Bridging Blocks | Data Centers and Artificial Intelligence

Massive data centers that power artificial intelligence and other digital technologies are multiplying across the country, driving significant new demand for electricity. In some communities, data center development has raised concerns about energy and water use, pollution, noise, and other effects on quality of life. At the same time, data centers provide the infrastructure that keeps much of our increasingly internet-dependent lives running.

On Aug. 26, 2026, Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer signed legislation intended to make sure data centers are “committed to paying the full cost for energy it uses to ensure that those costs are not shouldered by homes or businesses.” Specifically, the new law would prevent data centers from passing power and facilities costs onto ratepayers.

How should we weigh the benefits and challenges of data center development? How can technological advancement and environmental responsibility coexist? How can communities balance economic growth and technological progress with concerns about water and energy use, pollution, and quality of life?

This is a facilitated community conversation in which attendees will engage directly with one another in a moderated setting. Rather than a lecture or presentation, the program is designed to encourage dialogue, an exchange of perspectives, and shared learning among participants.
