Studio 2 Tavern Revolution 250: The Hessians
As part of WHYY’s ongoing series commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Studio 2 invites you to a special Tavern Revolution event—an evening of history, conversation, and community. Hosted by Cheri Gregg and Kevin McCorry, this engaging program will take place at the historic Barnsboro Inn (699 Main St, Sewell, NJ) on March 19, 2026.
This installment explores the complex and often misunderstood story of the Hessian troops—German auxiliaries hired by the British—whose presence shaped not only the fighting in the region but also life across New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. While they are most famously associated with the 1776 campaign and the pivotal battles around Trenton, Hessian soldiers were stationed, marched, encamped, and, in some cases, later settled throughout New Jersey. Their story is one of transformation—from feared enemy combatants to prisoners of war, farm laborers, tradesmen, and eventually neighbors who contributed to the state’s cultural and economic landscape.
One of our guests is Rowan University historian Jennifer Jankofsky, Director of the Red Bank Battlefield Park, who led the archaeological dig that uncovered 13 Hessian soldiers remains in a mass grave at Fort Mercer in 2022.
Join us for a lively, tavern-style conversation that brings this layered history to life, examining how wartime encounters across New Jersey evolved into lasting local connections that still echo in our communities today.
Enjoy a drink on us, pull up a chair, and join the conversation as our hosts dig into the complicated realities—and surprising legacy—of the Hessians in New Jersey.
