Bridging Blocks | Aging in the City

Data from the 2023 U.S. Census Bureau reveals that 35% of older Philadelphians live below or near the poverty line. That's more than most of the 17 cities studied for this analysis, including Detroit, Baltimore, New York and Chicago. In the United States, the number of severely cost-burdened senior households (spending more than half of their income on housing) has more than doubled — from 5.2 million to nearly 11.7 million, according to American Community Survey data.

Older adults may experience houselessness when faced with rising or unexpected living costs. Is society — or more specifically, Philadelphia — doing everything possible to ensure our oldest residents can live comfortably and safely? What is it like for older residents in the city and what can be improved?
