Bridging Blocks | School Redistricting: Good or bad for Hockessin?

The Redding Consortium for Education Equity is expected to recommend school redistricting plans for Wilmington and northern New Castle County school districts in December. Next year, the Delaware General Assembly must approve those plans before implementation. There are currently three options going under consideration, and all three have Christiana School District removed from the city, ultimately sending the district’s students elsewhere.  “We need our city kids to be in a district that can do a better job making sure they get the education they need,” Wilmington Mayor Carney said.

How does redistricting impact the community? Will these changes improve or hurt students' educational outcomes? Are there alternatives? Here are the three options currently on the table:

  • “Metropolitan Wilmington School District: Consolidating Brandywine, Red Clay and the city of Wilmington into one district
  • Northern New Castle County Consolidated School District:  Consolidating all four districts serving Wilmington. It would not include the Appoquinimink School District in the southern part of the county
  • Brandywine and Red Clay School District: The two districts would be responsible for educating all students within the city of Wilmington. There are three variations of the boundaries for this option”
