Bridging Blocks | Book Banning: Censorship or Protection?
While there are no federal laws, school boards or local governments have to decide what books will be available or restricted in schools or public libraries. Federal judges have ruled that book banning is unconstitutional censorship that violates students’ First Amendment rights. But, local governments and schools across the country are enacting policies that restrict certain books. What consequences does book bans have on our communities? Does this practice diminish free speech? Should the government play a bigger role?
