SOLD OUT: WHYY's Lifelong Learning Award Honoring Yo-Yo Ma

This event is now sold out.

Details

Since 2002, WHYY has honored a public figure who has demonstrated a passion for lifelong learning. We are delighted to announce that Yo-Yo Ma will be honored with the 2024 Lifelong Learning Award on May 1, 2024 during an in-person award presentation.

Yo-Yo Ma's career is testament to his faith in culture's ability to generate trust and understanding - from his iconic performances and recordings to original undertakings such as the Bach Project and Our Common Nature, a cultural journey to celebrate the ways that nature can reunite us in pursuit of a shared future. Yo-Yo was born to Chinese parents in Paris, where he began to study the cello with his father when he was four. Three years later, he moved with his family to the United States, where he continued his cello studies before pursuing a liberal arts education.

The highlight of this event is the live interview of Yo-Yo Ma by Terry Gross, award winning and world-renowned host, and co-executive producer of Fresh Air. It will provide additional insight into Yo-Yo Ma's life and career. Fresh Air with Terry Gross and Tonya Mosley will air the interview on WHYY-FM and more than 650 NPR stations around the country and it will also be broadcast on WHYY-TV. In-person guests are also invited to attend a VIP reception and behind-the-scenes tour of WHYY.

Proceeds from this event will support WHYY’s commitment to encouraging lifelong learning and advancing civic engagement through storytelling, education and community dialogue.
